Job Description

Chronicle Heritage is seeking an On-Call Associate Architectural Historian to expand our team of experienced, motivated, and engaged historic preservation specialists in Ohio. The On-Call Associate Architectural Historian will provide technical and regulatory assistance to guide municipal, state, and federal projects through the National Environmental Policy Act, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) processes. The On-Call Associate Architectural Historian will assist in efforts to identify and document buildings, structures, objects, districts, and historic landscapes, and will be responsible for NRHP, and local register significance evaluations and assessments of effect. The On-Call Associate Architectural Historian will also apply the Secretary of Interior (SOI) Standards for Rehabilitation and develop and implement creative historic preservation mitigation, including Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record/Historic American Landscapes Survey documentation, oral histories, interpretive displays, and video documentaries.

Job Duties:

  • Work with our team of cultural resource professionals to undertake historic resource surveys and other investigative work related to the identification, evaluation, and assessment of effects to historic properties
  • Prepare technical reports and associated documentation
  • Assist with the development of proposals and cost estimates
  • Maintain regular communication with clients to keep them informed of project progress, project schedule review, and ensure all project needs are being addressed in a timely manner and within budget
  • Assist with coordinating project review with state and federal agencies, including various SHPOs

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in history, architectural history, historic preservation, or a related field
  • Meet or exceed the SOI Standards for Architectural History
  • 2+ years of experience conducting historical research, completing historical resource surveys, and evaluating the historic and architectural significance of properties under National Register of Historic Places criteria
  • 2+ years of professional experience as an Architectural Historian
  • Proficient understanding of state and federal historic preservation laws and regulations, particularly Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act
  • Ability to travel throughout Ohio and the Upper Midwest to conduct research and field survey

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of historical Midwestern architectural forms, styles, and trends, and the various historical property types and characteristic of the region
  • Demonstrable research, technical writing, and communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
  • GIS experience
  • Experience in Ohio and other Midwestern states
  • Experience working on tribal lands/with tribal and other stakeholder groups
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat
  • Experience with developing technical and cost proposals
