Principal is hiring for a Retirement Transition Leader to lead our Defined Benefit Deconversion Team.
In this role, you’ll lead a team of individuals who engage, educate, and support participants and/or plan sponsors during plan deconversions/terminations to Principal.
Responsibilities may include:
- Oversee and lead a client transition team to assist in plan terminations; analyze and understand team capacity and staffing, establish customer service quality standards.
- Lead daily operations of a team of plan termination managers and specialists who interact with participants and/or plan sponsors in a manner that engages them in their retirement planning and meets business goals. Direct and allocate resources to support workload and processes. Will oversee team members who work remotely.
- Select, lead, coach and motivate team to further their development and utilize their capabilities. This includes maximizing team performance through effective selection, team building, training, coaching, performance management and salary administration. Provide ongoing feedback for improvement. Ensure staff is equipped with necessary business literacy and competency development. Celebrate success of individuals and team.
- Identify and analyze escalated problems and provide guidance to team members for resolution. Will require direct client de-escalation, negotiation tactics and problem-solving skills.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff throughout the business unit and the company in order to identify and understand objectives; plan accordingly, and implement solutions to improve effectiveness. Understand workloads and ensure optimal staff model is maintained to achieve all key performance metrics.
- Perform other job-related duties or special projects as required.
Who You Are:
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Experience managing a transition team with an understanding of client escalation and meeting deadlines.
- 6+ years of leadership experience required.
- Excellent verbal and written communication; decision-making, analysis, organizational, problem-solving, time management, and relationship-building skills required.
- Knowledge of retirement plans, products, procedures, resources and regulations required.
- Must have the ability to balance working independently with working in a team environment to meet customer needs and achieve overall RIS goals.
- Must be a self-starter who can work independently and with people at all job levels.
Salary Range Information:
Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
Salary Range: $95,200 – $182,400 / year

Work Environments
This role offers in-office, hybrid (blending at least three office days in a typical workweek), and remote work arrangements (only if residing more than 30 miles from Des Moines, IA, or Charlotte, NC). You’ll work with your leader to figure out which option may align best based on several factors.
