Position: Communications Manager (Full-time, Exempt)

Salary: (1.0 FTE) DOE

Salary Range: $70,000 to $80,000

Start Date: Urgently Hiring

Location: Remote (within the United States)

ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION:

Asian Pacific Partners for Empowerment, Advocacy and Leadership (APPEAL) is a national non-profit organization working toward justice in the Asian American (AA) and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) communities. The organization’s mission is to champion social justice and achieve equity and empowerment for AA and NHPI communities by supporting and mobilizing community-led movements through advocacy and leadership development on critical public health issues. APPEAL is a national leader in addressing health justice issues such as tobacco control, and healthy eating and active living.

APPEAL’s accomplishments include the development of a national movement on AA and NHPI tobacco control, a model technical assistance and training program for diverse communities, a national policy framework, the cross-cultural APPEAL Leadership Program and training of over 1500 leaders from diverse communities of color and LGBTQ. APPEAL is a national leader against commercial tobacco, launching major advocacy campaigns to counter the tobacco industry targeting and advancing health equity.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Assist with the development and implementation of APPEAL’s communication plan and selected campaigns;
  • Write and disseminate media and advocacy bulletins related to tobacco and other social justice issues;
  • Write and edit articles, papers, reports, and other communication for APPEAL;
  • Assist with the production and distribution of Network materials including factsheets, toolkits and case studies;
  • Work with APPEAL’s Executive Director and management staff to ensure consistent and appropriate message delivery;
  • Provide media and communication technical assistance as needed;
  • Develop and nurture media contacts;
  • Contribute to improving communications internally and externally for the organization;
  • Assist with the writing and editing of grant proposals and reports;
  • Represent APPEAL at conferences, meetings and other events;
  • Work effectively with diverse communities and nurture relationships with community partners, coalitions, and community leaders;
  • Draft communications to APPEAL members, donors and potential donors regarding APPEAL’s fundraising campaigns;
  • Assist in organizing APPEAL events and activities;
  • Contribute to the development of a team effort encouraging growth, professionalism and active participation of program staff; and
  • Perform other duties as requested by APPEAL’s Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Excellent written and verbal communication required;
  2. At least five years of experience in developing and implementing communication strategies for Asian American, NH/PI communities and other diverse communities on health and social justice issues on the local and/or national levels required;
  3. Understanding of, and experience working with, Asian American and NH/PI communities (and other diverse communities) required;
  4. Self-motivated and the ability to work independently and maintain communication with the director and the overall program required;
  5. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish positive relationships with community members and organizations required;
  6. Ability to contribute to a larger team;
  7. Bachelor’s degree in communications, public health, public relations and/or related field, plus five years’ work experience or commensurate experience required;
  8. Proficiency with PC-based computers and Window, experience with Microsoft Office suite: Word, Excel, Outlook required. PowerPoint desired;
  9. Experience and knowledge of commercial tobacco control or public health-related field helpful; and
  10. Commitment and ability to support and implement the goals and objectives of APPEAL.
