Job Description
Member of the academic staff responsible for guiding and supporting School of Behavioral Sciences MA learners with their practicum placements and responsibilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides support, assistance, and encouragement for students in securing appropriate practicum placements
- Communicates with and coordinates practicum placements for MA learners in the School of Behavioral Sciences
- Assists with review of the rules and regulations of the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) to ensure program compliance.
- Facilitates opportunities for additional practicum placement opportunities for MA learners
- Contacts, evaluates, and approves placement sites and supervisors
- Networks with practitioners and agencies within the mental health community to develop practicum opportunities
- Co-facilitates weekly Clinical Case Conferences (CCCs) for all trainees in practicums, internship, and field placement courses within the MA, PsyD, Addiction, and Advanced Addiction Studies programs
- Assists with (APR) Academic Program Review process for the MA program and continuous improvement initiatives for MS, and BA programs
- Oversees processing of practicum Affiliation Agreements and MOUs for MA program placements that require them
- Advise, mentor, and support MA practicum and internship learners
- Advises the Programs Coordinator, Dean, Chair, Vice-Provost, and the President on matters related to MA practicum and internship program improvements
- Counsels’ students regarding personal and academic problems affecting their performance during practicum
- Evaluates progress of students in clinical skills development in line with program goals
- Keeps current on trends in clinical skills development and engages in opportunities for program improvement
- Manages student conduct and practice-related issues that arise during practicum
- Provides/assists with practicum orientations for MA practicum and internship learners to ensure compliance with university requirements
- Ensures that Faculty Mentors for practicum and internship are performing to the University’s standards of quality and integrity
- Supports MA Learners to facilitate the successful completion of the practicum experience as well as retention and successful completion of the degree program
- Conducts ongoing Mentor trainings related to practicum courses and requirements and as deemed necessary and appropriate for the department.
- Serves as a faculty mentor, teaching all qualified and credentialed courses within the School of Behavioral Sciences.
- Serves on, and actively participates, as a member of university committees as needed and assigned
- Reviews and evaluates practicum curriculum for appropriate rigor and breadth
- Oversees processing of practicum Affiliation Agreements and MOUs for MA program Learners
- Assists with coordination of university-sponsored events within the community, state, and national membership organizations
- Assists with accreditation activities as needed
- In collaboration with Programs Coordinator, Dean, Chair, other Director/s of Clinical Training, and other staff, supports state authorization efforts as appropriate
- Keeps current on clinical trends and opportunities for improvement in the MA clinical experience component
- Performs other assignments and administrative duties on an ad hoc basis as required
Supervisory Responsibilities:
May be required to directly or indirectly supervise Faculty Mentors related to MA, Addiction Studies, and Advanced Addiction Studies practicum, internship, and field study courses. May manage one or more assistants, coordinators, chairs, and/or mentors as required to accommodate department growth. Continuously collaborate with the practicum and internship faculty mentors in assisting, guiding, and evaluating Learners in their clinical development as mental health practitioners.
Qualifications – External
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of a relevant clinical Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with 3 years of related clinical experience and/or training. A Doctorate degree (PhD or PsyD from an accredited institution) and more than 3 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.
PROFESSIONAL LICENSURE:
Minimum: Must hold an active license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) and have at least 3 years of experience supervising MFT Trainees. Preferred: Holds dual licenses as an MFT and LPCC and has at least 5 years of experience supervising MFT Trainees. All licenses are active and in good standing.
QUALITIES:
Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills and experience working with a diverse student body and issues. Possesses flexibility to problem solve and make informed decisions on matters that impact students. Builds collaborative relationships with faculty and staff to help students achieve educational/career goals. Shows proficiency in establishing short and long-term academic goals. Experience with computer business applications and conferencing software is required.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governing body regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from colleagues, learners, accrediting and licensing agencies, and the public. Effectiveness in human relations and dealing with the human aspects of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee must regularly talk and actively listen. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include computer technology and written materials which require close vision and color vision. WORK ENVIRONMENT:
As a remote employee, he/she must provide a work space that is safe and conducive to a business atmosphere where staff can interact with and provide undivided attention, removed from distractions.
