Controls Engineer
We are looking for engineers to design and implement control systems for automated material handling equipment. This is project/application-based work that provides new and varied technical challenges from one project to the next. Application development and testing will take place in the office. Completed work is installed and tested at the clients’ facility, and requires 30-40% of time traveling.

You’ll be…
- Using AutoCAD for electrical design including device layout, schematic and control panel design and communication architecture.
- Meeting with both client and internal project teams to define applications and produce functional specification documents
- Performing component selection and bill of material preparation
- Configuring standard PLC programs for real-time control of automated equipment and collection of diagnostic and production data.
- Customizing standard products to meet the requirements of each project.
- Developing application programs to control automated equipment based upon specific electrical and mechanical system design as well as operational requirements.
- Creating application programs for Human Machine Interface screen design
- Writing interfaces to devices such as network I/O, variable speed drives, camera and laser scanner ID systems, and scales.
- Conducting in-house preliminary testing and onsite testing of the system as installed at the customer’s facility.
- Interacting with mechanical engineering, control panel fabrication, and electrical installation personnel
- Providing customer training and support
- Generating project-specific documentation using standard company formats.
- Leading design reviews with project teams
- Providing continuing support for finished projects
What you’ll need…
As a Controls Engineer, you must be self-motivated and dedicated with a strong sense of initiative and the ability to easily adapt to changing situations. You must also have strong technical, programming, and team leadership skills as well as solid organizational, time-management, and prioritization skills. It is also important for you to have excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with a wide range of people at all levels of expertise.
Specific qualifications for the Controls Engineer position include:
- BSEE, EET, BSCET, BS Computer Science degree or equivalent
- Experience in the material handling/equipment controls industry preferred but not required
- Experience with the following:
- Control Systems Engineering/Electrical Engineering
- 3-Phase power and electrical circuits
- AutoCAD
- PLC Programming Logic
- Communication Networking
- Excellent client follow-through skills
- Ability to work effectively in a warehouse environment for system testing, including climbing ladders and moving around on platforms to maneuver in and around equipment
- Flexibility to travel around the country, often via air
